Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist

Work through this list once and your profile will outrank most of your local competitors. 15 concrete steps grouped by category. Print it or save it as a PDF and tick each item off.

1. Claim and Verify

Claim your profile on Google Business Profile.Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If a profile exists, claim it. If not, create one.

Complete the verification process.Google typically verifies by postcard, phone, or video. Until verified, your profile may not appear in search results.

2. Complete Every Field

Set your primary category to the most specific match.Add secondary categories for additional services. The primary category is the single biggest ranking factor.

Write a complete, keyword-rich business description (up to 750 characters).Mention your main services and the areas you serve. Avoid keyword stuffing — write for real people first.

Add all your services with descriptions and prices where applicable.Services appear prominently in the profile panel and help Google understand what you do.

Set accurate business hours (including holiday hours).Incorrect hours are one of the most common reasons customers lose trust before they even call.

Add your phone number, website URL, and correct address.Make sure your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) matches exactly across your website, Yelp, Facebook, and any other directories.

3. Photos

Upload at least 10 high-quality photos of your work.Before-and-after photos, team photos, and photos of your vehicle or equipment all build trust. Profiles with photos get significantly more direction requests and clicks.

Add new photos at least once a month.Fresh photos signal that the business is active. Set a recurring reminder to upload from a recent job.

4. Reviews and Replies

Ask every customer for a review right after the job.The best time to ask is when the customer is most satisfied — within 24 hours of completion. Use SMS, email, or a QR code on your invoice.

Reply to every review — positive and negative.Thank positive reviewers by name and acknowledge the specific work. For negative reviews, respond calmly, take responsibility where fair, and offer to make it right offline.

5. Posts

Publish a Google post regularly — a weekly cadence is a good target.Posts appear in your profile panel in search results. Share a recent job photo, a seasonal tip, or a promotion. Update posts stay on your profile until you replace them, so a steady stream keeps your profile active.

Use the Offer or Event post type for promotions.These post types include a call-to-action button and are displayed more prominently than standard updates.

6. NAP Consistency and Citation Building

Audit your NAP across major directories.Check Yelp, Facebook, Angi, HomeAdvisor, Nextdoor, and your website. Any mismatch in name, address, or phone number weakens your local ranking signal.

Add your business to at least 5 relevant local directories.Industry-specific directories (e.g., Houzz for design, Angi for home services) send Google strong local relevance signals. Each listing is a citation that supports your ranking.
