Local SEO & Google Review Statistics for Local Service Businesses (2026)

These are the numbers that actually decide whether a home-service business gets found on Google — reviews, local ranking, and the new AI-search landscape. Every figure below is sourced and linked to the original study. Writers and marketers: you are welcome to cite these stats — a link back to this page is appreciated.

Do online reviews really affect local businesses?

Yes — reviews are now table stakes for getting chosen. Nearly every prospective customer reads them, and many trust them as much as a personal referral.

97%

of consumers read online reviews for local businesses, and 41% say they “always” read reviews when browsing for one.

49%

of consumers place as much trust in online reviews as in a personal recommendation from someone they know.

How many reviews — and what rating — do you need?

A short answer: at least a 4-star average and 20+ reviews. Below those thresholds, a large share of customers filter you out before they ever call.

68%

of consumers will only use a business rated four stars or higher — up from 55% in 2025. 31% now require 4.5 stars or more.

47%

of consumers won’t use a business that has fewer than 20 reviews.

Does review recency matter?

More than review count. Customers discount old reviews, and Google rewards a steady, recent flow — so consistency beats a one-time burst.

74%

of consumers look for reviews written in the last three months, and 32% only trust reviews from the last two weeks.

Weekly

review velocity is the lever: in a controlled case study, a business’s Google Maps rankings dropped after it stopped collecting reviews and recovered once it resumed — the guidance being to match your competitors’ weekly pace. Even moving from 9 to 10 reviews produced a measurable ranking bump in every business tested.

What actually drives Google Map Pack ranking?

Your Google Business Profile and your reviews are the biggest factors you can control. Proximity to the searcher matters too — but you can’t change your location, so profile completeness and reviews are where the leverage is.

~32%

of local-pack “thematic weight” comes from Google Business Profile signals — the largest category you control — with review signals the next-largest at roughly 16–20%. The single most important individual factor is your primary GBP category.

How is AI search changing local discovery?

AI Overviews are absorbing clicks that used to go to websites — but local and branded searches are far more resilient than generic informational ones.

58%

is how much AI Overviews cut clicks to top-ranking pages — for every 100 clicks a #1 result historically earned, Google now keeps 58.

68%

of US Google searches now end without a click to any website.

+18.7%

The exception is branded search: when an AI Overview showed a clear answer for a branded query, click-through actually rose about 18.7% — being a recognized name is protective. (Single-vendor study.)

How do you get cited by AI (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews)?

You don’t need to be #1, and polished marketing pages aren’t what get quoted — real conversations and answer-first content do.

38%

of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in Google’s top 10 — meaning most citations are pulled from further down. You don’t have to rank #1 to be cited, but classic SEO still feeds the pool.

#1

Reddit is the single most-cited domain across AI answers, and user-content platforms (Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Wikipedia) dominate the most-cited list — genuine discussion outweighs brochure pages.

3.9x

more ChatGPT citations, on average, for domains with a heavy Reddit presence (10M+ mentions) versus those with little presence. (Correlational, single-vendor.)

44%

of ChatGPT citations come from the first 30% of a page — put your answer first, not buried under a long intro.
